64bit DAW Laptop Recommendations
64bit DAW Laptop Recommendations
Hey there.
Looking to upgrade from 32bit to 64bit for the increased RAM capabilities. Anyone have a suggestion (preferably via experience) of a good 64bit laptop?
Thanks.

Thank you, Mario, but our princess is in another castle.

Santa brought my daughter a quad core Asus laptop for x-mas. She's not recording audio on it, she's gaming, but that thing is a badass mutherfucker. I can't believe how freakin' awesome it is for ~$1200. I'm told Asus is #1 for customer satisfaction and reliability, ahead of apple. They make mobos, video cards and lcd's for everyone else so it makes sense that they might rock a laptop. The screen is 16", but as a widescreen, it's the same height 768 px as a 14" laptop screen.
I have an older model - a single core pentium (gasp!) - that I now use for mobile duties. Its been a workhorse.
The ADK guys know their stuff - tell em what you want to use and they'll make sure it works and can discuss how much power you need. You are paying for their advice so sit back and let them make the hard decisions. Tech support is always a real person, except regular business hours only.
Generally they are taking asus or other notebooks - optimising the operating system a bit and customizing the parts to the buyer. If you have computer know how you can do this and save some $$ - but it can be time-consuming...

I think TI made some of the chips but ASUS makes their own boards...
that being said, many DAWs don't support 64bit yet. A lot of people are getting a system with 4gigs of ram and are calling it a day.
On laptops you're spending a crap ton of money on higher ram systems... but if you're going desktop you can get 6 - 8 gig systems all day long in the $1200 price range.
I have an ASUS laptop that I got for cheap that has overall worked fine. Its nothing fancy and I only needed it school. I don't game on it because the vid driver sucks.
The only complaint I have is the stupid mouse buttons are really hard to push down and my thumb gets tired...

yeah, seems we're in an era right on the cusp of 32 and 64. people who want to go up to 64 can't yet because of software/drivers. it's frustrating. i suppose a solution could be to get a 64 bit processor, run a 32-bit OS, and wait for the software, but by the time that happens things like your ram (ddr4 is right around the corner) will be dated. eh, maybe i'll just try to stick with this dell for a few more years until this all shakes out.thegeek wrote:that being said, many DAWs don't support 64bit yet. It ain't that the DAW doesn't support 64bit, it's the the plug-in companies have been slow to get on board. Sonar and Cubase are both available in 64bit versions, but you have to make sure all your current 32bit plug-ins either have 64-bit counterparts or will work in a 64bit environment.
