D12 or D112 ?

Post by akg414 » Tue Oct 20, 2009 7:04 am

I recently heard a recording with a D112 on kick. Sounded really great. I'm wondering if it's worth it - or a huge mistake to sell my D12 and get a 112?

Anybody got any insight or experience to go one way or the other?

It it were me, I'd keep the D12. I don't like the D112 all that much. That great sound you heard could have been due to the way the sound was manipulated after the fact. The Audix D6, Sennheiser e902, and ATM25 all are more versatile and IMHO better kick mics. That D12 of yours is also worth more money than a D112 because they haven't made them in a long time. At least keep your D12 and add a D112 if you must.

I'm a fan of the D112. I don't own one myself, but have used one many times in other studios. I know it doesn't get much love around the forums, for some strange reason, so I'm sure you'll get a lot of "112's suck" opinions.

I definitely wouldn't sell the D12 though. They don't sound the same at all, and a D12 in good working order will be worth a hell of a lot more over time, while the D112 will only decrease in value. It'd be pretty rad to have a couple different choices for kick/fl. tom/bass amp/etc....

D112's aren't expensive, and used they're extremely affordable, so it wouldn't make sense to me to sell one for the other.

I really like the D112. They aren't that expensive, there is no need to get rid of the D12.

The D112 is also good for bass and other low end instruments.

There is no need to have only one mic for a certain purpose. I have (2)D112, (2)Beta 52, an Audix D6 and sometimes I use a 421 in the kick.

All of the advice to hang onto the d12 is not applicable if you don't like the sound you're getting out of your d12. No sense hanging onto a mic you don't like just because of the number on it.

+1 If you don't like the mic, then it's really just a potential source of cash to get something you do like.

However....

+1 on that too.

And flipping farview's point on its head, there is no need to have only one purpose for a certain mic. After hearing that a band I worked with recorded a bunch of their vocals with a D112, I've tried it a few times, with predictably mixed results. I've also used it as an additional mic on a guitar amp for a fuzz lead part, where it was great.

D12 or D112 ?

Keep the D12. The only thing a D112 should be used for is a kik drum beater. Or you can use it to hang dry wall.

I used mine on a guitar amp yesterday and for vocals the week before last. I do both of those frequently.

Stuff that sounds good on that mic.

Certainly not anything hi-fi. At least, I haven't heard that mic sound hi-fi on anyone's voice yet. With certain people, it can be a really intimate, greasy, sort of "1970s slick" thing. I think I once read something where Tchad Blake talked about using that mic on a vocal and comparing it to Sly's "Family Affair." With the right voice and delivery, that's pretty accurate, but it doesn't always sound like that. Sometimes, I'll just use it when I'm looking for something weirder than normal.

I don't think the D6 has any versatility at all. That thing has the most aggressive smile curve I've ever seen on a mic. Mega hyped lows, highs and almost no mids. It speaks one language: metal.

The e902 seems like a lesser e602. Not as solid of a fundamental coming from the kick, and a little extra click.

I think both the D112 and the e602 are great kick mics. I also like the D112 on bass amps from time to time, although typically mixed with something a tad flatter.

The ATM25 seems cool to me. I'd like to buy one. It seems unlike all of those other kick mics mentioned. I've only used it on a floor tom, but it seems a little closer to the SM7, RE20 side of things if not a little more hyped in the highs.

I thought my d112 sounded great AFTER a lot of eq. I always found it too clicky and I had to take out a lot of mids it seemed, then it sounded like a kick drum should sound (to me at least). I find the e602 basically sounds like the d112 but better, without having to use any eq. However, like they said the d112's are super cheap used so you can try one pretty easily.

I liked the D12, but, IMHO, the D12E was better.
