firewire 800 port and digi 003 via firewire 400
Hi all.
Will I be able to use a digi 003 (via firewire 400) into the firewire 800 port on the new Imac without any issues? Will I need to get some sort of 400 / 800 bus port to go in between?

Get a firewire 400-to-800 cable like the one below (you can definitely find a better price) and it'll work fine. I often run one of my firewire interfaces like that.

Not to intentionally hijack this post... BUT, I've been waiting for Mac to consider reintroducing something with multiple FW ports, but it doesn't look like that will be happening. So, with the release of these new iMac's I'm thinking the time may be right to replace the ol' PowerBook G4 workhorse.
What I'm wondering is if the internal iMac drive (1TB is pretty impressive) is stable enough to record directly to it, or if I should risk daisy-chaining through my Digi003? It sounds like I've got a very similar setup to SoulOfJonas.
I would like to try recording more of my projects at 88.2k, but I'm worried about the potential for taxing the system. The reason I'm so cautious is because I was interning for a guy (who charges a LOT more than me) once who had mobile rig that crashed on him after one of the greatest takes all day. It wasn't pretty.
The specs for the system I'm pricing out can be found here: http://store.apple.com/us/configure/MC4 ... TMzNzU5OTY with the option of 3.33Ghz pc, 8GB of RAM, the 1TB drive.
Anyone with experience recording straight to the internal drive? I've just always tracked to my external Lacie's. Thoughts?

I have the internal HD on my iMac partitioned and I track to the partitioned drive all the time. Then I usually copy the whole folder to my external drive for a back up. I write to my external drive too, but I have never had a problem with tracking to the partitioned drive, even when recording up to 12 tracks at once. Just make sure it's formatted correctly and I don't think you'll have a problem. I use Leopard, PT 7 and now 8, and a digi 003.AK Audio wrote:

The reasons to not to track to your system drive:AK Audio wrote:Anyone with experience recording straight to the internal drive? I've just always tracked to my external Lacie's. Thoughts?
1) you'll have 1 drive to run your OS, the DAW, record audio AND play back audio
2) every hard drive will fail in time
3) heavier use often means faster failures
It's not so much about performance in the moment (though it is dinged technically), it's about the long term performance.
"Blessed are the pessimists, for they make backups."
Also, on the Powerbooks, the 2 FW ports are on one FW 800 bus, so it's mostly an aesthetic difference versus a real help.
Your iMac won't catch fire or anything, but it'd be wise to track to external drives
The truth of a proposition has nothing to do with its credibility. And vice versa.
