Makin' cables: Good source for bulk shrink wrap? Diameter?

Post by Aj » Wed Oct 21, 2009 11:34 am

Looking for a good online source for shrink wrap tubing to make a bunch of cables... any recommendations?

Also, what diameter shrink tubing do you buy when you're making guitar cables? How about mic cables (or do you just skip the shrink wrap when doing XLRs)?

Aj

edit: Just to be clear, I'm looking for shrink wrap to cover the inner soldered portion before you slide down and screw on the plug (not the wider shrink that some folks use on the outside of the plug itself).

A couple of options, in no particular order:

They mark it by the unshrunk diameter, and it shrinks to about 1/2 that, and is usually 4' long. 3/8" is good for mic and guitar cables (though often omitted on mic cables), and think I've used 3/16" when making snakes, because it bulks up the snake pairs so that the chuck on a Neutrik XLR bites a little better.

I get mine from Mouser, MCM electronics MPJA electronics

Oh yeah and I get most of my cables and connectors from Markertek
markertek.com

It is a proven fact that your electronics supply place has to start with an "M" or you are just jerking off in a void. Actually I never noticed that all my supply places start with M before. I must have mothering issues.

Great replies guys... I'm off to purchase some 3/8" shrink from a company that starts with M!
