Several of the open-ended questions have not been tabulated yet, but for those of you wondering about the average income for a recording engineer, that figure is $21,233.

This is from 11/24/2009 in the New York Times. Looks like somebody else had a similar idea:

From the "The artists surveyed tended to earn either very little of their overall income from their artwork or almost all of it. Slightly more than 40 percent said that in 2008 they earned 20 percent or less of their total income from their art."

Statistics are always a good indicator of future trends.

In my experience, only the top percentile makes the most money, whilst the rest just plod along until they make it or go awry and change fields. It's difficult to make a living in a creative industry. Writers, actors, singers, filmmakers, painters etc. have a long a road to success.

Industries like retail, real estate, construction, IT, etc all have great rewards for hard work and persistence.

How come the creative industry struggles to be the same?

It seems likes the gaming industry, even though it's deemed as creative have managed to look after their workers and breed new and better games and have grown into a huge money earner.

Why not the Audio/Music industry?

The game industry has its own issues, standard 80+hour weeks being one of them. But yeah, I know what you mean.

Part of it, I'm sure, is that you don't have 5 thousand wannabe game designers in every city with no money trying to get product made for $35/hr. Local bands on the other hand...
