DIY LA2A and 1176

Post by thegeek » Wed Dec 16, 2009 6:18 pm

I am looking for places to find kits for LA2A and 1176 kits. I've been to all the forums and seen all kinds of info on sourcing my own parts, etc. But I'd rather get a kit and most of the links claiming to have a kits are dead.

Anyone know where I might find one?

Thanks!
Nate

I don't think there is anyone actively selling full fledged kits for these right now?

The Drip LA2A has a super detailed build manual and you can get the PCB and opto cell both from him. I haven't built one but its next on my list.

I just started (last night) my mnats 1176 build. Hairball Audio sells a small kit with the transformers, vu and hard to source parts and soon they will have cases. The only instructions you get is the 60 page build thread but everyone there seems super helpful if you have done your homework. If you just want a cheap way to get into an 1176, definitely stay away from Prodigy Pro. However other members have made BOM's so you can pretty easily track down the parts from Digikey or Mouser, but its not a paint by numbers thing like the SCA kits.

Take a look at this:
http://nimbleswitch.com/diy/1176_revD/i ... page=parts
Links and everything! Easy as pie.

Also check out Hairball Audio, Mike carries all the "items from other suppliers" and he's even got a great looking case that's nearly in the store. Also do some reading on the Revision D thread at the prodigy-pro forum.

You might be in over your head a bit at first, but there's nothing more satisfying than solving a puzzle, eh?

Good luck...

1176 cases

Post by mikelevitt » Fri Dec 25, 2009 7:44 am

I bought some really nice 1176 cases with laser engraving, etc from this guy:

Tat Purusha <tat>

Took a while to get them, and he's in Slovenia, but the cases are really nice and were not very expensive.

Unfortunately, I have not had time to put the comp together (yet...)

I had a Gyraf 1176 and found major design flaws with their schematics.
Just be careful when you build those. There was transformer in and an input circuit that was redundant among other things.

dripelectronics.com - great PCB and help. Gregory's a super nice guy. I love my LA2A - cost about 700 to build but almost 200 of that was for the case from Romania.

Yes, there are several options available on the same PCB. You need to know what you want and what you're doing. If in doubt, refer to groupdiy.org - there's a lot of help to find over there.

Hi Guys,

Yes I offer kits with enclosures.

I'm in the process of adding BOMs to the website under the "Support" section. Right now I have the Rev D BOM posted.

Thanks!

groupdiy has become an incredible resource for builds and maintenance. Anyone interested in DIY would be very happy to become a member...
