1 Reel of Tape Used On 11 Tape Machines @ The Same Time

Post by cjmnash » Wed Dec 16, 2009 9:58 pm

Okay- so last week i posted a video of an "Extreme Transfer" where i was using two tape machines to do an analog to digital transfer. that got me thinking...how many tape machines can i use at the same time?

here's the answer:

This brings up the question I had on the other thread:

Are all of these machines just accidentally the same height? Is there an accepted standard height for tape machines? If not, how much trouble did you go through to keep the tape run somewhere close to level?

Forgive me if this seems obvious, but I have never worked with open reel machines.

That could be the largest fripptronics set up ever! By the way, is that a Sparta console in the background?

actually- that was a huge concern on the 'extreme transfer' and it took me about a half an hour to get the two machines the same height and positioned correctly. however, for this stunt we simply positioned the decks that were similar in height next to each other and had enough space between them to help with any height differences.

no...there are two consoles in the background, one is an old radio console (i forget what make/model) and the other is an MCI 428

That's fantastic! And I got flashbacks from seeing some of those tape decks.

What a great parallel for modern analog recording,

"A surplus of tape machines, and nobody booking time to record with them."

Dude, you need to make this a mastering process. Run the tape through the 11 machines, then time align the results. Then brickwall the shit out of it. Call it EXTREME ANALOG mastering. It'll rule!

That's awesome! You should experiment with tape delay using each machine for a feedback. that would be rad! by moving the machines closer or farther away for each other you could control the CRAZY long delay. hahaha I challenge you to find a useful song to do this on!
