2 or 4x10 for guitar

Post by LazarusLong » Fri Dec 18, 2009 5:28 pm

I'm in dire need of help. I cannot, for the life of me, find a decent 2 or 4x10 cabinet that seems like a good purchase to me. Price is not my chief concern but VALUE is. If there's an $800 cabinet that it worth it, I'm down. Though, I feel like I should be able to solve this for around $300 - $400.

Here's what I need for my guitar cabinet:

10" speakers (don't care how many or few, really)
needs to handle at least 100W
will be run in mono
open / semi open (or at least still gives me that bite)

I'm mostly a clean player, but sometimes a light crunch. I use a Yamaha G100 head - beautiful clean, solid state amp. I play at lower levels normally to take advantage of the headroom, but sometimes I open it up to saturate the big iron core transformers. I like the "New York" sound. This is typified by the Velvet Underground's work after the "banana" album. The clean, punchy and bright tones offset my deep baritone voice nicely. I had a decent 2x10, but it did not survive moving.

Thanks TOMBers!

These guys do great work and have fantastic prices:

And I'm sure that with all their options you'll be able to get a configuration that works for you.

Hmmmm... try a Sunn 610S. It is a 6x10" speaker cab that sounds very nice; loud and clear. It might be hard to find one, since they're all somewhat old (I think they stopped making them in the '70s).

I don't think they're in very high demand, so you could probably find one well within your budget. A friend of mine bought one for something like $250 a few months ago.

Weber has pretty cheap empty speaker cabs. I have a couple of their speakers and they are great. I have never seen one of their cabs though.
To handle 100 watts you would need some of their higher end speakers.

antique electronic supply has 4-10 cab empty for $211. With a discount on Jensen speakers to go with it. Item #M-4X10-CAB I've never seen one of their cabs but have used them for tubes and other parts.

Mesa Boogie? I've seen some boogie 2x10 and 4x10 cabs that were half open backed, The bottom speaker(s) being enclosed. I havent seen many, most of that design I have seen were 12" not 10" and I dont think they make it anymore.
I have also seen a guitarist get a really nice sound with some peavey 2x10 that I think was intended for bass.

I needed a 2 x 12" cab, and had an old, fried Peavey Classic 50 sitting around.

I pulled the amp and blocked the hole, (shot the aluminum black and pulled the logo) put in some Celestions and now have an awesome, light and sturdy open-backed cab.

Here it is under my li'l Electar:

I love weber's stuff too- I have a cabinet made by them that is very nice, and I stopped buying those less-than-durable Jensen 12" speakers (I blew up 3 of the 75 watt models in my 22 watt Deluxe) and started using the Weber ceramics- sounds wonderful, and has last a couple of years now, to my delight. I have one of their alnico 12" that is going in a tweed Princeton-esq project I have, but I haven't tried it yet.

If I was you I'd think about getting a 4x10 cabinet (oh! my aching back!) with 2 alnico speakers and two ceramic speakers. Hmmmm- maybe I ought to get one of those...

something that some annoying old hippie sound guy told me once that turned out to be kinda true;
if you go for a 4x10 (or 4x12) you get a lot more volume due to the increased efficiency of the cabinet. But because its that efficient you dont work the amp as hard. If you use a 2x10 or 2x12 it has to be turned up anothercouple notches for the same volume, so you get a more sustainy sound (esp with tube heads).
OTOH cabs like 4x10, 4x12 have an inherent kind of thump you cant get with a 2x10 or 2x12. But then of course multi element cabs will always have lobing and phase issues.
