tom waits "get behind the mule" question

Post by pixeltarian » Sat Dec 19, 2009 4:45 am

what's that snareish sound after he says "mule" on the glitter and doom live album?
sounds loud and amazing. how/what is it?

I think the 4 is just a clap with some major compression and verb. what is the thing on the 2?

Doesn't pertain to your question...but just wanted to say that is one of the best sounding records. Been listening the hell out of it lately.

That's tough. I know he often uses unusual stuff for percussion. It could just be a regular drum set with a little extra compression and reverb. Or maybe it's a sledge hammer on a stack of 2x4's.

Either way, very cool. I've been on the wait list for this album at my local library for a few weeks. I'm excited to listen to the whole thing.

This version of 'Get Behind the Mule' was taken from the Tulsa show. I was there, sitting on the second row. The sound in question is a clapper: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clapper_%2 ... trument%29

Ah the clapper!

It's not just for turning off the lights without leaving your bed anymore.

I keep 2x4's around the live room for just this kind of sophisticated technique.

OMG! is there a question that you can't find the answer to just by asking on the internet?

ya gotta love it
