A Ceiling Question.

Post by Sculli » Mon Jan 04, 2010 2:37 pm

Current height of ceiling 7' 10". Was thinking about removing drywall above drumset. Would make it 9ft or so. Worth the extreme pain in the ass? Any comments welcome! Thank you!
Peace,
Kevin

The above would be a big improvement.

You should fill at least half the depth with material. 8" of fluffy pink would work fine.

Thanks again! I was checking these out as an alternative to ripping up my room. http://www.acousticsciences.com/lsa/cooltrap.htm What do you think?

The Ethan tip posted by Grinningidiot would work a lot better than those panels.

I believe 16" no support posts. 35'L x 23'W x 7' 10"H. don't know how to post pics. Sorry. Roscoe, I'm pretty happy the sound just trying to get rid of some flutter echo. So you think it's better to take the room out of the picture? Thanks again everyone for your time.
Peace,

what kind of treatment do you have in your room now?

If you have some 703 panels either 2" or 4" thick you could hang them above your drum kit temporarily to see how much some absorbtion would help the sound of your overheads.

The same kind of panels above your console listening position would help a lot there too.

If you don't have any you could make some or buy a couple to see what it could do for you. grab Some 2' x 4' panels and experiment. There's lots of info here about either building them or buying premade ones.

Also, removing the drywall will likely decrease the iso you get from the above floor (and the iso they get from you). Not saying you shouldn't still do it, just be aware of what's gonna happen when you do it.

Thanks JWL it's under our bedroom so iso shouldn't be a problem. Roscoe, I have tons of 703 and roxul. I don't want to kill the room, just tame it a bit. I will try a few clouds on the ceiling and see if that doesn't tighten it up alittle. Thought maybe the height might open the sound. Thanks for your time guys!
Peace,
Kevin

I've found ceiling reflections to be the worst sounding ones.
Absorption above your drums shouldn't "kill the room". If anything It should
effectively 'raise' your ceiling.
