Copy effects settings from one poject to another? (Pro Tools

Post by billkahler » Mon Jan 25, 2010 6:15 am

Anybody know how to copy effects from one project to another in Pro Tools? For example if you have a couple songs with the same instruments on the same tracks and you tweak one project with compression, eq, on drums, is there a way to copy the same settings into another project? Thanks.

Once you get your mix dialed in do a Save As. Label the session mix template (or something). Remove all audio regions from the session (remove, don't delete).

Open your next song. Select Import Session Data (option, shift, I). A menu will ask what session you want to import data from, choose mix temp and then highlight the tracks you want to import. Drag the regions from your old tracks to the newly imported tracks. Done.

That's the easiest way, but it won't work if you already tracked everything before you need to copy stuff over. The other option is to use the "import session data" option. Just import the tracks you want from another session, but tell it to "link to source media" so you don't make an extra copy of the audio files. Then just drag the plugins on to the tracks in your new session and delete the tracks you imported. Works like a charm.

Thanks Marc,

Somebody told me there was a way to just impor the effects and they would show up on the tracks in the other project. In other words, say you have a band come in and do 5 songs with 16 tracks in each project. You spend time doing eq compression, etc on song #1and since song #2 set up the same way, you import the effects and settings to song #2 and they show up exactly the same as #1. I wonder if this is true or was the guy mistaken.

If you're on a ProTools HD rig "Import Session data" has a lot more options (thanks again, Digi!). You could just select plugins and settings and automation, match your incoming data to the correct tracks in the new session, and it will bring in that information only.

If you're on an LE rig, you're pretty much left with saving a mix template as described, and importing those "blank but treated" channels into subsequent sessions.

If you want to move all of your audio regions to the newly imported tracks, go to page 35. If you choose to move all of the plugins down from imported tracks to the current ones, jump to page 68. If you want to try to bribe the giant with a mutton leg, run to page 14.

You can't save channel strip settings in Pro Tools?

You could also just save the plug settings as something specific (projectx_kick_compression), then reload that patch setting into a new plug-in on the new session.
