Altec 1589b schematic

Post by telepathy » Wed Feb 03, 2010 2:40 pm

figured it'd be out there, but I can't find it anywhere. I have spec sheets for the 1588b input transformers, but not the mixer itself.

anyone?

(I'm trying to wire up the output and can't seem to get it to pass signal. I'm hoping it's just me doing something dumb.)

thanks!
get up with it

I just went through looking all over for one online. Here it is:
http://www.bayoucables.com/altec/

I'm going to be varnishing and baking the output transformers on mine soon. Check this out if yours end up being noisy:

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Instead of baking and varnishing them, has anyone tried PlastiDip? You can get it at Home Depot or Lowes in the paint dept. www.plastidip.com

It looks like my link to the transformer dip article is kaput. I found it again using the way back machine, though.

I don't know if PlastiDip is conductive or not. If it is, I can see that being a problem.

I haven't had time to try dipping them in varnish, yet.
Part of the job requires dedicating an oven for this type of thing because all the evil that gets baked out of the transformers will render the oven unsuitable for breakfast taco re-heating.
Luckily, our toaster oven is 10 years old so buying a new one will make me a household hero. Win-win.

I'll start a new thread for when I finally get around to trying this.

Yowza.
I've got two of these and I love them.
Problem is that they are too noisy, but that's ok since I only use them on high SPL things.
Do you think that the caps may be the source of the noise, or is it the op amps?
I'm going to open mine up next week and have a look.
I love you.

It's probably the output transformers.
If you have a scope or have access to one, check the signal right before it hits the OT and I bet you see a nice looking sine wave. Check again on the other side of the OT and I bet you see the noise.
These OT's were not dipped when they were made, probably to save money. Over time moisture gets in there and they get noisy.
This is why I'll be baking mine some day, hopefully this year  .
If the electrolytic caps are original they should be replaced. Luckily, the circuit board is really easy to remove. I bought two of these and one wouldn't even pass signal due to a bad cap. I ended up with two more because I found them for so cheap [$30 bucks each] I couldn't resist.

If you're up for a project, check out the link I posted above and run it through the way back machine. It takes you through how to bake a transformer.
If you're not into that, Jensen makes a compatible OT for the 1589B. I can't remember which one it is, but I'll look into it again.

UH OH

So I bought 2 right?
They both pass a ton of what I assume to be 60-cycle hum.
They pass the test tones, but very faintly and overwhelmed by the hum.
Any ideas?
Maybe this is a barrier strip issue?
I only had 15 minutes to look at these in the rack and I got discouraged pretty easily.
Advice?
I love you.

They are not generating a 60Hz hum, its coming from somewhere else. Check your connections, check the connections inside the can.

I checked the connections. and they were all correct and nothing was shorting to ground.
I'll look at them again this weekend when I've got time.
I love you.

Spent 30 minutes with it yesterday.
The Ground is shorting to - on the barrier strip.
On both of the units.
Maybe I'm just hioking it up wrong?
I love you.

God I'm dumb.
Upon closer inspection of the insides, I realized I was given the wrong schematic.
I love you.

That don't make you dumb.... Not punishing / seeking revenge / payback to the low down that gave you the schematic.... that would be dumb :)
