Recommend Plug-ins for Pro Tools

Post by roseylarose » Mon Feb 08, 2010 12:30 pm

Hi -

I'm not a huge fan of plug-ins but I do like having a large palette of sounds to experiment with and finally made peace that I can't afford everything in analog form.

I'm currently on the hunt for a cool bundle of effects - delays, distortions, general weirdness - I'm a huge fan of later Beatles and like the production of Flaming Lips and Animal Collective.

Any ideas for stuff to check out for Pro Tools?

many thanks
Andrew

Get the VST to RTAS wrapper from FXpansion. One $99 purchase will afford you hundreds (600+) plugins that are available for free or as shareware online. It is the single most important plugin purchase you can make.

I've always been thoroughly pleased with McDSP's work as a whole.

When you say free or as shareware online... I'm new to that world - could you point me to a site or two? (I'm on a mac if that makes any difference)

thanks for the help

You can't go wrong with the Massey plug-ins. They're free to demo. I love the mastering limiter, compressor and the tape delay.

They're not cheap, but Waves has some of the best sounding ones.

Their new H-Delay is crazy.

Cheers

Massey, Massey, Massey. I kind of want to try another DAW but without the Masseys I would have a tough time.

The majority of the effects I use in PT (LE) are UAD effects, in my opinion they are the best out there. I also have Massey's, McDSP and also the Digidesign ReelTape suite, which is also excellent. The stock PT plugins are not bad either. I also have Waves' API bundle, which is good, but doesn't get much use TBH.

Following the links in this thread...

...led me to some free plugin goodness. I dunno if VST's work in ProTools or not. I guess that's what the wrappery thingy is all about.

Fxpansion VST-RTAS. Then have a look at plugins from Schwa/Stillwell, Audiodamage, valhalla dsp and expert sleepers.

They all have excellent demos or are free, and none use ilok to authorise. Also try and get hold of camelcrusher which is free compressor/distort-er/filter from camelphat.

For the pricey stuff, I really like Waves SSL. Waves' GTR Solo bundle also has tons of fx pedal and amp sims and is pretty reasonalbe I think.

I just downloaded fxpansion's vst-rtas wrapper yesterday. Now I'm on the hunt for some cool plugins! Only thing that sucks is so far a lot of the ones I came across were for pc. But, I haven't exhausted my searches yet...

Oh yeah, and I second or third the Waves SSL bundle. Love it. I was really torn between that and the API bundle. Anyone have a preference one way or the other?

So I'm covered on eq and compression. What I'm really looking for are some better reverbs than d-verb. Anyone have any suggestions free vst-wise?

I love PSP plug-ins. They've got a harmonic goodness you might like when trying to get close to a Flaming Lips/Animal Collective type production.
