Issue with Homemade Cables for Monitors

Post by Matt C. » Sun Feb 21, 2010 4:10 pm

So today i made two new cables for hooking my monitors up to my mixing board. the cables are XLR to RCA. i wired them like this:

xlr + goes to RCA tip
xlr - goes to RCA sleeve
xlr 0 (ground) isn't connected to anything on the other end

i got this from that big table of wiring instructions on the Rane website.

when the mixing board is on, everything, as far as i can tell, i working fine, no problems. however, when the monitors are on, but the mixing board is off, the monitors buzz. so now i'm wondering -
1. is this sort of grounding issue going to possibly damage the monitors in any way?
2. should i redo the cables so that the xlr ground pin (as well as the xlr - pin) is connected to the RCA sleeve?

weird, I did this today too at the studio I intern at. Yeah you connect it the same way as an xlr to unbalanced 1/4". So like you said redo them so that xlr ground pin and (-) pin go to RCA sleeve. Or apparently you can just link the xlr pins 1 and 3 (ground and -)by soldering a wire between them and then connecting xlr pin 1 to RCA sleeve. Dunno if this helps anything other than just being easier to solder. found this link with google if its easier to understand,
