Tom Dowd and the Magic Edit

Post by Peter Malick » Mon Feb 22, 2010 6:19 pm

Hey TapeOp'ers,

My first post on this board, so I hope I'm in the appropriate forum.

I wrote a little post about a night, many years ago, that I spent in Capricorn Studio with Tom Dowd at the desk.

Love me some Allain Toussaint. I've got Brickyard on a live recording form the 75 Jazz Fest. Freaking awesome.

Man, me too! I have a distinct memory of hearing Lee Dorsey's 'Working In A Coal Mine' when I was 13 years old. I think it was the first song whose production interested me. It wasn't until a few years later that I discovered who was behind the record.

I finally met Toussaint about 10 years ago. Another true gentleman, as well as a brilliant musician. BTW, I think it was his last record that was produced by Joe Henry. Cool.

If you don't, get them. Lee with Allen as writer/arranger/producer/background vocalist. It doesn't get much better.

Well, I haven't found the track that includes the edit, but I did find a picture from the tracking sessions.

Tom Dowd is highly regarded by another highly regarded fella' in this article. If you're into the musings of an art world demi-god, check it.
Thanks for the personal story...very cool.

Cool, I just saw the documentary on Dowd a few weeks ago and it was really inspirational.

Loved the story. Tommy was something special. Before his recording career, he worked on the Manhattan project developing atomic bombs. Thanks for sharing.

Language of Music

Post by Peter Malick » Fri Mar 12, 2010 12:26 pm

My 2 favorite scenes in the movie are:

When he brings up the Layla session on his console. It was like watching Coltrane play the sax, totally in the flow.

When he talks about the 'new' digital technology. Here was a guy who started recording on wire, and at the end of his life was still excited to see change take place. A true homo universalis.

A Renaissance Man.
