Cheap Weighted Key Keyboard?

Post by SaneMan » Wed Mar 03, 2010 8:26 pm

So I'm looking to buy the cheapest possible keyboard that meets the following requirements:

-Weighted (or possibly semi weighted) keys
-Midi Out
-Some sort of Audio Out (ST/Mono, 1/4", XLR, doesn't really matter)
-A decent piano sound (would be nice to have other cool sounds, but I can create them via the midi, I really just need one decent sound)

I've been doing a lot of looking around and have been finding soooo many keyboards I've never heard of (and a lot of really expensive ones), so I was hoping to narrow my search with some advice from some people who have experience with a keyboard they like

This does NOT have built-in sounds, but is cheap, and not bad for the price:

M-Audio ProKeys88.

Otherwise look at what Casio has to offer.

Yeah, have you used the M Audio? It looks like it does have audio, and fits all my requirements. Seems to get mixed reviews about the key action though, and they (the keys) seemed really loud and clicky on a youtube video I watched. Nonetheless, might be the winner. Anyone used a Yamaha P-70? That looks pretty good as well, though slightly more expensive

I haven't looked much at the keyboard/controller market for a while. But in the fairly inexpensive category I have not played anything that beats the action on my old Alesis QS8. It's not a real piano action, of course, but it kills the action on my Kurz K2500 and other synths. 88 keys (the models with fewer keys don't have the same action). I think it's classified as "semi-weighted;" in any case, it's not that springy action you get with most synths.

Alesis has made one or two "revs" since my model (QS8.1...), so maybe the piano sound(s) have been improved since the late 90's(?) The early version I have can work in band context, but it's not suitable for solo work. Or use it as a controller with a more up-to-date virtual piano (e.g., Ivory).

I'm not a pianist or keyboard player, but the Yamaha Clavinova digital pianos always felt pretty good to me in terms of weighted keys. Plenty of those around second-hand (at least in the UK :) ) Onboard sounds are OK, full midi capabilities too though if you wanted to use as a controller ...

There are two models... the grey one... which is the one I have, which does not have sounds... and the black one, which does have some sounds. But I listened to them... hence the grey unit sitting in my studio.
