Mixing with guitar pedals

Post by Trick Fall » Thu Mar 11, 2010 6:52 pm

I know there are level issues when reamping a track, but what if you want to run a track out to a guitar pedal? I've got a Tech 21 reverb pedal and I'd like to try it on some vocals. Can I just use an output from my soundcard to it or will the level be too hot? I'd experiment, but I'm afraid of blowing something up.

nothing's gonna explode. you are gonna have to pull the volume way back though. if you can go from your soundcard into a mixer and then put the pedal on an aux send that'll probably work best, but if not just pull the level down like 30db in yr DAW and work it back up to where the pedal's happy.

BTW, anyone have any favorite pedals they like to use for this purpose?

Sans Amp Classic - i like to split the mix bus and make two mono passes through it. Nice flavour to mix in to a track when needed - keeps the highs and lows but adds a bit of life to things. I also kinda like using the audio input in my Novation synth (not a guitar effect, but..y'know) - absolutely the worst distortion i've ever heard, and that can't be bad...
I like you mostly late at night

+1 on the Sans Amp classic. I use it on kick and snare.
I run a cheapo lo z -> hi z adapter on the input and a active DI on the output.

I can get weird using an Electro Harmonix stereo memory man. A Big Muff fed into a Dr. Q can get really nasty.

I ran drums stereo through my Line6 FM4. Got some pretty cool sounds.

My moog MZ-104 get's a lot of use like this but it is designed to take line level signals. The rest of the times it is various nasty fuzz pedals and TBH when they are in use it is pretty much for total destruction so there is no wrong way to do it (not that there would be otherwise of course  ).

Thanks, I'm definitely getting some ideas. I really want to try the Boost RVB and also my POG. I'm thinking there could be some serious weirdness to float under backround vocals and such.

The POG, re-amped, would be great for all kinds of stuff.

Fwiw, Joe Chiccarelli has mentioned in interviews that he's a fan of using the Eventide pedals in the mix process. Notably the Eventide Time Factor

Forgot to say I also heard that when OK Computer was mixed from Radiohead they ran everything through a Joe Meek pedal. Not sure if that's true or not.

Just the other day I got some cool results with the EHX Cathedral reverb. I'm definitely going to mess around the Memory Man as well.
