I downloaded the information for the AKG C60, a vintage SDC tube mic, and the original product literature included this picture;

I was kind of amused by this at the time. That being said, I can't say I've used SDC mics too often for vocals, though there is at least one track I can remember where an SDC was the winner. Like others have said, they do make for nice room mics.

I haven't an instrument in mind for which I wouldn't use an SDC, some SPL situations forbid the use of some SDC, but most of the possible sources can be recorded with.
Overhead sucks, put that in front .....

A little late to this conversation..haven't been here for a while. I also use SDC on guitar cabs about 1-2 ft back. sometimes it's exactly the right sound.

Rick Ruben used KM84s angled down about 3 feet away on clean amps when I used to work at Sound City.
