recommend a good resonator guitar for under $1000.

Post by joninc » Wed Apr 14, 2010 11:44 am

hi there - i am on the hunt for a resonator guitar for recording - something that i can actually fingerpick on - not a squareneck/slide only model.

i want it mainly just for the texture of the tone as an alternative to a normal steel string acoustic.

i am open to the all metal ones or wooden.

what do you guys use? like? hate? recommend?

The truth of a proposition has nothing to do with its credibility. And vice versa.

Do a search on ebay for 'Galveston'. I bought a dobro type guitar for giggles and was SHOCKED at the qualitity of the instrument. Nowhere near the tone of a 40's National of course, but the bang far exceeded the buck.

Has anyone played the Eastwood Delta 6?

Always been tempted - online clips that I've seen / heard sound decent ...

Check out Liberty Guitars. I recorded one and it sounded absolutely incredible, great depth of tone. I believe they're very affordable, but I'm not sure exactly what they cost.

I own a Regal Resonator that I love. It's the lower end model (cost around $350 or so), but for my first, it's great. Beautiful inlays and all that... feels solid. I've recorded a bunch of stuff with it, and it always sounds nice with a SDC or 57 out front.

I'd love to have an all-metal one, and a square neck as well. It's currently my new guitar playing obsession. So much fun.

I have a square neck dobro that I bought new for about $1000 that sounds really fat and rich. It's a Crafters of Tennessee. They make round neck as well I think.

Edit: YIKES just spent more time on that site and see that they are all $3k or so...
Not sure how I got mine so cheap. Oh well. Maybe they have a cheap line or used to or something....

sorry for the bad lead.

I have a round-neck Regal with a Quartermann cone in it. It sounds great and I think the whole schebang was around $500 or $600 with a case at the time. Gary at Acoustic Outfitters in Stratham NH set me up. He has to to some work to get the Quartermann in there, but it was a huuuge improvement over stock. The build quality on the Regals is nothing to write home about, but man does it sound sweet!!

i needed one for a film score a while back. i tried a bunch out: nationals, dobro, regal, johnson...some were expensive, others were cheap. ended up getting a goldtone "beard" model that sounded great. almost as good as ones that cost 4X as much. they are about $800 new, $500 used.
waaaaaaaam...doggy.

You can pick up a used National Tri-Cone for about $1200. Amazing. I recorded one for a Bela Fleck session and it was amazing.
Still waiting for a Luna reunion
