opening a mac formatted drive session on a PC?

so i was in a conversation with an engineer friend the other night getting hipped to a program you can install on a PC so it will recognize mac formatted drives... this is awesome news to me because I use mac formatted drives instead of FAT32 or other formatting because I've heard it's safer for your data, but therefore can't work on sessions on my PC unless I transfer all the files over... but this could mean there's a way to work off a session, in pro tools for instance (though i assume any program that's on both mac and pc), right off a mac formatted drive. Does anyone do this? I did some quick searching but haven't found anything yet...
