>>>>If it's just for fun then why not do both? A version with mono drums and a version with stereo drums. You don't have to be married to only one choice do you?<<<<

Wouldn't that mean having to track it two different ways (track count/management) prior to mixdown, rather than just mixing it twice (one mono, one stereo)? Better to decide which way and get 'er done.

I'm with Garges - mix the bass to one track and have L/R drum tracks. You can pan them up the middle if you decide you want mono, or you can mix for stereo.

The OP seems to want it mono because of being committed to the track count plan, not because of a preference for the sound of mono drums. The drummer seems to prefer the sound of stereo drums. I say, modify your plans and get the drummer what they want to hear. You don't have to choose Bass DI or Bass Mic. Use both! Just use a mixer to submix them to one track on your 8 track.

I feel like the drummer's say is being undermined here...I mean not to beat a dead horse but when I'm restricted to 8 tracks I don't need two separate bass tracks or a dedicated ear candy track (bounce your candy to other tracks) if it is the difference between someone else being compromised. I mean I'd say track it for stereo and make a mix for mono and a mix for stereo...but you can't do the opposite once you've only committed to mono. IMHO mono vs stereo drums will make a bigger impact on the records sound than bass di or amp...makes sense NOT to commit at this point with the drums if the band is not in agreement. I also say that if you don't want to commit to bass di or amp then just track the di and when you want an amp track reamp (though I'm more of an amp almost always kind of guy).

If all it takes to make the drummer happy is to give him stereo drums instead of mono, that's a pretty easy compromise that shouldn't kill anyone involved. And for the record, if a client asked me to record mono drums I'd still record for stereo just in case they decide mono isn't going to work for them.

and it does make sense to give the stereo instrument 2 tracks and the mono instrument one.

What do you think the chances are that the OP is the bassist in the band?

In that case the track count should be :

1.- Bass cab front mic.
2.- Bass cab back mic, out of phase.
3.- Bass DI from amp head.
4.- Bass DI from a Radial DI box. just in case the amp head DI craps out.
5.- Bass Effects LEFT.
6.- Bass Effects RIGHT.
7.- Bassist Voice.
8.- Omni Room mic for everyone else.

Cheers
Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.

Shit where are you going to put the off axis bass mic, the piezo direct, and the "acoustic" mic the strings of an electric tracks?

Awesome.

Of course the band could chip in and buy studio time somewhere, too.

Nice one, heheheh! Not the bass player, though -- guitar player! Check the original tracklist, I already have 2 tracks, Heheheh! Might be splitting those with another guitarist, though.

My board's submix capabilities are already being used by the drums, so mixing the two bass tracks together conventionally is out.... but it would be GREAT if I could figure out a way... (I love the sound of the amp and DI together)

If I don't end up mixing the two bass tracks (or deleting one), I'm thinking we can record the ear candy tracks on my drummer's laptop to a guide track. Then we can just dump it into the computer at the studio when the time comes. Everyone is broke, so I would end up footing the bill for extra studio time, anyways.

As always, I have to express my appreciation for the intelligent & gentlemanly whimsy I encounter on this board. :)

Extra Bass Tracks...

If you're bringing in a laptop, doesn't that solve your 2-bass track problems?

Sounds like everyone in the band gets a vote. Can you do a song both ways and then take a vote? Don't cheat by purposely effing up the stereo drum mix. Have friends and family vote too. Fun for everyone. Maybe neither you or the drummer are objective enough to see the forest for the trees here.
