Headphones for college

Post by Poirier812 » Mon Jul 12, 2010 9:13 am

I'm going to college for music production and my list of required items consists of Pro Tools Le, Logic Studio, Sibelius, a midi keyboard and either headphones or monitors.

I have all of them except the headphones or monitors.

I think for college the headphones might be a better choice so that i can work in my dorm room too.

My question for you guys is what are some all around good headphones for recording and such, that aren't super expensive.

Grado SR60 for $69 or Sennheiser HD280 for around $99.

For critical listening, you'll want an open back headphone. I like the AKG 240, but they need a decent bit of juice to drive them. Grado SR60s aren't bad.

For tracking, a sealed back headphone will keep bleed from being a problem. I tend to consider price higher than sound quality on these, since they tend to get abused. Sennheiser HD202 and AKG K44/55/77 are decent, I find the AKG to be a little more durable.

So would it be best to buy two seperate pairs for mixing and tracking?

And thank you for the suggestions. I'll check them out.

Buying two pairs is a good idea, if only to get into the practice of checking your mixes on numerous playback devices.

The Sennheiser HD280s mentioned above sound great except that it's hard to tell what's going on in the low end. I've been enjoying mine since I bought them a year ago but lately have been looking around. Dave Rat did an epic and thorough headphone shootout on his blog and the Denon D2000 won, maybe worth thinking about.

***I have been very happy with the Shure SRH440 phones for tracking and mixing. They're super comfortable, sound great, the bass is quite true, and they're relatively affordable. I do prefer them to all the other phones we've got here: AT, AKG, Sony, and especially the Fostex T20's that we've used for decades.
Cheers!

I haven's listened to the Mark II, but I do own a pair of 240S and think they would be a fine first/only set of headphones for what you are doing.

I got through all of college on a single pair of HD280s and I still track with them every session.

My advice would be to buy headphones with the flattest frequency response possible for the budget you have. This info should be available on the manufacturer's websites.

Personally I am fond of the Sony MDR 7506s. I find that when I have to to editing or preliminary levels/EQ using headphones everything translates pretty well once I the song into a proper monitoring setup. They're about $100, and seem to be built well. I've had mine for 4 years and they're like new.

If they're anything like my K271's, they'll be nicely accurate but fatigue-inducing.

I don't find the k240s fatiguing at all. I haven't used the k270, but they're sealed, which I always find more fatiguing.
