I may be the only person in the world who uses it, but I like the Blue Kickball. Insanely hot output, and a switch for changing the voicing from boomy to flat to thin.

And seeing as I'm the only person who likes 'em, they sell for peanuts on ebay.

Blue Kickball...

Post by Gregg Juke » Wed Aug 11, 2010 11:48 am

So what's the deal on that "phantom-powered dynamic?"

Any idea how that works?

I certainly can't give you tech details, but FWIW my Kickball puts out some signal even when the phantom isn't on. Not a super-wimpy signal, either, but a pretty reasonable and recordable one if Reaper's meters are to be trusted. I've never actually recorded or listened to it without phantom, though, so I don't know how it sounds (a Tape Op travesty, I know).

What about these clone mics?

What's an OSP Dt610 based on? They're other mics are obviously 57 and 58 knock-offs.

Btw, my experience of the Samson Q series, they're alright, those plastic clips are shitty and break easily, and the Q-Kick (like lots of other budget kick mics) doesn't have any response below 50Hz, check out all those kick mics that come in kits, lots of them have no low end.
The previous statement is from a guy who records his own, and other projects for fun. No money is made.

great microphone.

It works just fine. They run some sorta amplifier in the mic body, and have the EQ switch as part of the circuit. Not all that different from features you'd find on a condenser.

Never heard the e602 but I was pretty disappointed with the 902 on kick. On bass cab though, it sounds great.

How would ya'll say the e602 compares to an RE20 or 421? For reference on my taste, I dig those two, use B52s sometimes, immensely dislike the D6, and can go either way on the D112.

I would describe the e602 as a d6 with less click and a bit more bass.

If you look at my R16 thread in the Listen to My Shite forum you can hear what my MXL 1006 (LDC) sounded like. I had placed it 3' ahead of the kick (2' off the floor) and it became a kinda room mic, altho' in the mixes I have been EQing it (well, pass-filtering it) as a kick, with a lotta bleed.

I actually like it!

Next session (tomorrow?) I'm gonna put it up at 1' away and see what happens ...

Yeah, its pretty freakin' awesome how that thing works so well. At first I thought of it as another hyped eq kik mic.... but really, its a GREAT kick mic, and you can get a bunch or different voices just on placement alone.
