Cheap kick mic
Cheap kick mic
Aiight, I asked some time ago, but for an update, what's a decent but cheap kick mic?
Anybody know the Shure PG52?
Or am I better off with the Audix D4? D6?
Anybody know that Samson Q-kick?

Audix D6 is usually my go to (beta 52 is decent but I like the audix better) but if you don't already have an akg d112 I would start there because I find the d112 useful for bass cab also, whereas I don't care for the audix d2/4/6 on any source but drums.
If price is an issue buy used.. I got my d112 for maybe around $100...much better deal than a pg series any day.

People love to rag on them but I do love my D112. I started with a Nady "bass drum mic" that's definitely the equivalent of the PG line, and it was just absolutely horrible. You know how most times if you can't get at least a somewhat usable sound from a piece of gear you're just not understanding a good way to use it? With this, it was the mic, haha. I got a D112, instantly so much better. I've never had an issue with the "basketball on a gym floor" sound people complain about, but I usually mic about a foot away from the resonant head. The scoop of the EQ curve makes the kick sound actually pretty natural since it's picking up a lot of mids when backed up a bit from the res head.
I also love it on bass cab (better than my SM7, MK319, or others I've tried), and it was even the perfect mic for vocals on one song on the album I just finished. I spent an entire day trying different mics, messing with EQ, finally I said "it shouldn't be this hard, why don't I just try the D112" and it was perfect. If you go to the link below, "Night Song" has the D112 on vocals. I love that mic. I'd like to try others (the e602 sounds incredible, the D6 seems pretty nice too) but I'm really happy with what I get from my D112.

Huh. I wouldn't use it as a kick mic, that's for sure, but I have one and have found it useful...

Re: Cheap kick mic
PS-- I also have several of the Audix D series mics, and I don't think there's anything wrong with them either (although I don't have/haven't used the kick mic in that series).

I loves me my Audio Technica ATM 25. No longer made, bummer, but might be able to find used. Lots of Whooomp. Built like a brick shit house too.
