Vlayman, what kick mic did you end up buying? Or not?
I'm partial to the AKG D112 myself. It tends to make every kick drum sound the same though, the "thud" rock sound.
It pays to buy a decent kick mic if you record drums frequently. If you use something like a Samson Q-kick or CAD KBM412, it will work but you'll end up eq-ing it to death to try and make it sound like one of the affordable standards: D112, D6, Beta52, e602. The Samson & CAD cheapies just don't sound as good in the end.

The classic dynamic "kick drum" mics that I own include a D112, a D12E, two TGX-50s, an M380, two M88s, and a 602. I have regular access to a Beta 52, RE20, ATM25, 421, and a bunch of great condensers. The 602 has been getting an INSANE amount of use lately and at this point, if I had to bail on all but one, it would be easy to choose the 602 in terms of pure performance. I paid $100 for mine from Sean Sullivan on here, which was a totally fair price for the both of us.

We have done two sessions and I have been using the MXL 1006, what is a cheap Chinee LDC similar to the 2001, etc.
I tried it first 3' away from the kick, 2' up - sounded like a room mic but useable as I just EQ'd it like a kick (pass-filtered, actually) and ignored the bleed.
Second session I had it 1' out, 2' up, slightly to the left of and above the hole in the front kick head (that hole is on the right side 1/2 up) - much more like a kick mic.
My mixes ain't great - yet - but you can hear it at 1' in the "Clean bass sound" thread in the Recording forum, and at 3' in the "Recorderman/Johns" thread in the "Listen to My Shite" forum, where there is also some porn, eh, I mean, pics.

I generally like it just inside the hole in the front head as a starting point. I think right up close to the batter head is my least favorite spot for it, but it doesn't sound as bad there as some mics do.passnthru wrote:So where do you like to place your 602's? Near Batter, Resonant head, etc... I'm usually using mine live and I haven't quite found the best starting point so looking for some suggestions if you will.

I have been cheerleading the 602 since it came out.
SO... um, e602.
the AT 4033 can be great along with it.
Also, some of those weirdo early 90's clip on saxohphone mics that AKG made work really well clipped to the shell of the kick, aimed at the resonant head. the thud of actually hitting the drum makes it activate in a very punchy way, with the mic then picking up the aftershock. a little compression and it can be a great sound. I need to get one of those again...

Also, I would have never expected to love it, but I used a Subkick at the band's request the other day and it was AMAZING.
Sadly the day before I had put some perfectly good speakers out on the curb (where I found them in the first place) so as to not have to move them to my new apartment It's possible to have one of those be the cheapest kick mic you can get, just the cost of an XLR jack and an inline pad, if you find a free speaker kicking around.
