m/s question

Post by phantom power » Fri Aug 13, 2010 3:16 pm

I'm recording a band live at a local venue tonight. I've recorded here before and tried SDCs in XY and LDCs spaced really wide. Neither was bad, but not what I'm looking for. Just for the record, I also take direct outs to mix into the room mics.

I'd like to try M/S tonight for the room. I've got a 414 for the side mic (I've only got one) but I'm not really sure what to use for the mid.

Should I be thinking LDC or SDC for this application? I've got a 451 if I go SDC or either a Royer'd mxl2001, blueberry, or Cad e100 if I go LDC.

Since I'm also doing FOH I don't really have the time to audition them all.

Thanks

your Cad e100 is a medium diaphragm, and is very sensitive. That's all I know.
Good luck

The e100 would make an aesthetically pleasing complement to the 414. I'd try it, or the 451. You might be surprised by the Blueberry, too.

e100 (which version do you have?) is a good mic for that sort of recording. Not just M/S, but as a stereo pair or whatever.

I've got a set of the original e100s. They're definitely cool. They're pretty much always good enough on most things. But when they hit, they're awesome.

Am I asking for trouble if I use the 451 and e100 as mid and just get all the capsules as close together as possible? Then I could process them both separately as the mid mic with the 414 as side and just compare them later. Basically two different m/s configurations all in one.

If you have the inputs, go for it! Would be kind of cool to see how the two different mics worked in the mid position.
