Do almost deaf people mix?

Post by Autodidact » Fri Aug 27, 2010 3:50 pm

I was just wondering, for a long time actually, if there has ever been anyone that mixed something with hearing aids.

I'm sure there have been engineers that, unfortunately, lost some hearing, so I was thinking there must be some material that has been put out?

Just thought it'd be interesting, perhaps humbling, to hear it.

Judging by some of the things I've heard over the years I HAVE to say yes.

It's the obvious answer, and, I think, the only answer needed. 8)

Yes I've heard some awful stuff that I have NO idea how it escapes everyone involved...but it would be offensive to people with hearing disabilities to credit THEM with these problems...

Seriously, though..I am sure there are a few, I know there was a guy in Tape Op who was pretty famous that is deaf in one ear...and I bet many engineers have a degree of hearing damage, so it'd be unreasonable to think that there aren't really.

I have a friend who is completely deaf in one ear, but manages to make amazing mixes. I'd imagine it would be easier in his case than it would be for someone with significant HF loss in both ears, though.

As an aside, have any of you had your hearing thoroughly tested? It's pretty amazing/alarming to find out where your problem areas are...

Brian Wilson.

Can almost hear nothing in one ear.

Amazing engineer / producer / performer.

Cheers

There was an engineer who used to work out of Normandy Sound in Rhode Island who could only hear out of one ear who has many gold and platinum records with his mix credit on them.

I was born 70% deaf in one ear and I manage to do it. It doesn't seem un natural to me since I never had hearing in two ears. People actually like my sounds too:-)

I had a teacher in college who met Evelyn Glennie, spoke to her for about 5 minutes at a conference and did not know she was deaf.

David Torn lost the function of his right ear back in the early 90's. He seems to do fine!

Man, you beat me to the punch!

I know one guy with a couple of great-sounding platinum albums who is deaf in one ear.

After seeing a show last night where the PA system (all Meyer gear, no less) had been tuned into extreme harshness with no mids, is that that it's only a problem when the engineer in question isn't aware of their limitations. My guess was that it was a half-deaf road guy who tweaks the system to sound like what he remembers as flat, not what he hears in his everyday life.

Somebody deaf in one ear would probably do fine as long as they're mixing it to sound like what they hear directly from the instruments.

Wow...this is pretty inspiring. I'm not deaf, at least I don't think I am, but it's inspiring to hear of people who have, what I would think, a professional detrimental disability for someone in audio yet produce/create/engineer great sounding music. Plus it shows how one could find ways learning how to listen in a different way to compensate and for any potential mishaps that are out there.

That Evelyn Glennie...man she is sexy. I love the way she speaks too.

As a middle-aged hearing-damaged guy who makes sucky mixes, my guess is Mr Meyer PA didn't mix 'flat' he mixed what he remembered as 'rawk' thus the no-mids all-suck mix
