You need to be a little bit more specific. Are asking for the best frequency to BOOST? to CUT?

What is the problem with your kick drum sound? Is it too boomy? Not cutting through the mix enough?

Be warned, though. Even if you answer these questions, no one will be able to tell you exactly "what the best frequency is". Hopefully you can be steered in the right direction and can then experiment to find what "the besft frequency is" for your particular situation.

i like kick drums with frequencies from say 35hz to 10khz. as to which of those is 'the best', well, i can't really pick a favorite. probably not 250hz though.

All just depends on the rest of the bass in your instruments. Alot of kick drums sound like shit by themselves once they are eq'd to the rest of the sounds. If you want a kick drum to sound great on it's own, put a mic in front of it and run it through a nice pre and there you go. But generally we try to carve out spaces in the bass guitar and kick drum so that they sound great together and don't compete for limited space

It depends on the song. Half notes on beat 1 and 3 are popular choices. Often they're more frequent than that.

I usually find something in the low end to give a little 'thump' and something higher up to give it a little 'thwak'. Maybe dip some stuff inbetween to give the bass guitar a little more room. You just have to hunt around for the most effective frequencies, and it's going to vary.

Kick drum EQ

Post by purple pie pete » Fri Sep 10, 2010 9:57 am

I love how polite everyone over here is! Versuviusx would have been torn a new one on that other message board. Even the jokes aren't mean.

As far as kick drums go, I think most would agree a little boost in the lows, maybe a little boost in the highs, and a bit of a cut in the low mids is generally a step in the right direction. All depends on the microphone, kick drum, placement, and song arrangement, though. Just do what sounds good.

I think he was asking about modern death metal. The correct answer is "a steady stream of 32nd notes." And since you're triggering pre-processed samples, there's no need to worry about adjusting EQ. I like the "Metal Overlord" kick preset in BFD.

You're welcome.
