Avantone Mix Cubes as primary?

Post by jmpace » Tue Sep 14, 2010 2:32 pm

Is this necessarily a BAD idea? I mean, if they make you work hard for a good mix, shouldn't that translate well across a variety of systems, thereby making your mix good? I would of course, check them with larger systems, but in theory this would work, right?

I know I'll miss out on deep bass, but I can live with that if it translates to a clear midrange.

in theory, you can get an amazing mix using a 6x9 car stereo speaker if you're willing to work super hard on it. We use different sets of speakers so we don't have to keep running back and forth from the car to the studio to the boombox. I like using speakers that translate very well. I don't like to second guess my mixes. And being able to tell what is going on bass-wise is very important to me. if it's not to you, then yeah, mixcubes should do the trick. but your mixes can probably be alot better if you used a full range speaker in conjunction with the mixcubes

I could be totally wrong but wasn't Thriller mixed on Auratones? Same goes for Peter Gabriel's So (although Lanois used a set of Radio Shack bookshelf speakers in series with the Auratones).
Do what you like.

Correct.

But they were not the only monitors used.

I've tried the Auratone/Radio Shack bookshelf speaker combo and I have to say it's a pretty great pairing. The RS speakers are kind of scooped in those mid frequencies that the Auratone covers so well. You end up with Auratones with extended highs and lows. Kind of like a poor mans NS-10 (I know, I know, the NS-10 is the poor man's NS-10).

I have a friend who only uses the aventones. He has a small home studio and he stuff sounds really great.

I have some Rat Shack minimus .3, they are like mini horroetones, 2 or 3 inch drivers. They tell me so much about my mixes that it's sick. I love those odd little things.

If you're only using the Aventones as a primary, are you backing them up with headphones?
Um excuse me, these headphones aren't working...

For sure, some nice Etymotics and Sennheisers as well as my primary listening setup. Luxman amp into AAD (by Phil Jones) three way speakers.

um, yeah, its a bad idea. like trying to paint an oil portrait with sunglasses on and telling yourself, I know what everything looks like with the sunglasses off, so I can learn to make my painting look like I didn't have the sunglasses on.....

jeez louise.....just get some full range good sounding speakers.

and fer chrissake don't paint with sunglasses on!!!

Hahaha... kind of a confusing analogy, but I understand your paint.

Hi,

Here's link to a few things I mixed using the auratone as a mono reference :

Note : Only the top 4 examples I mixed using the Auratones.

Cheers

I have Auratones and Event ASP8s as monitors - I use the Auratones FAR more than the Events for mixing, but it is useful to have fuller range speakers to reference on. I also reference on Sennheiser HD600 headphones - I reckon I could get away with just the Auratones and Headphones if I had to, but it's very tempting to crank headphones and that can ruin your perspective for an hour or so!

Here's what I got from my buddy Garrett:

Here's the most recent Steven Wesley Guiles EP release...
http://stevenwesleyguiles.bandcamp.com/ ... de-us-home

And the LP before it...
http://stevenwesleyguiles.bandcamp.com/ ... -be-lifted

You can stream all the songs from those pages... feel free to post in your avantone discussion. I think the mixes sound pretty good... :)

My fav mix of the bunch is probably Keep Me Coming Back on the LP. I like the stacked vocals in the bridge... I wrote all those string and flute parts too...
