So I just took a multi-meter to my wallwarts...

I thought that I might have a failed power supply for a small consumer item at home so I tested it with my multi-meter. It's labelled as having an output of 6 volts DC but on the meter it was putting out 11.8.

I decided to put a few more to the meter (like most of us, I've got a drawer full of the things), the 9-volters put out 12 volts, 3.7 was really 9 volts.

So what's the deal? There is obviously a huge range over what these are labelled as and what they're putting out.

... or should I look into a new multi-meter?

That's without a load, though. They should settle down to much closer to their rated voltage when actually powering something.
