Drummer-Activated samplers?

Post by akg414 » Wed Sep 29, 2010 10:28 am

What are the best samplers that can be mounted to a mic-stand, so a drummer can hit (his stick) on it to start/stop the loop?

I remember seeing a few bands doing this. but can't remember the gear.

I thought that the Roland SPD-S was the only one with a full sampler onboard - others are either just pre-recorded sounds, or they are MIDI pads triggering a seperate sampler or laptop.

http://www.roland.com/products/en/SPD-S/

It is mountable to a mic stand, though I think they sell the mount seperately.

One more vote for the SPD-S. Those things are great. But if you want to get an extended memory card for it snag it up on ebay right now! It only takes up to a certain size (512 megs I think) and they don't even make them that small anymore.

yes, it only takes up to 512 compact flash cards. i got a stoopid deal on amazon for a bunch of them.

roland has a new pad out, the octopad, that i looked into briefly, but i'm not ready to upgrade yet. you may want to see how it lets you load and organize samples - it might be a little more modern than the SPDS but it might also rely on a computer too much, i'm not sure.

Looks like the new Octopad is pre-recorded sounds only, no sampling.

I know I'm a little late on this, but there's an in-depth review and discussion of production/live techniques for the Roland SPD-S unit in the November issue of Drum! Magazine (should still be available). There's also a review of that bass drum port thing somebody else mentioned in an earlier thread.

Also, it looks like a similar but different Roland unit is covered in the November issue of Modern Drummer.

Hey Leigh,

Yeah, it's in the November (newstand) issue, and it's in-depth on the Roland unit; 5 pages or so(?).
