Iphone dock connector to XLR?

Post by ctmsound » Fri Oct 01, 2010 6:53 pm

Does anyone make something like this that offers mic in or line out? That doesn't cost more than the phone itself?

I don't know about line in, but as far as line out these are really sturdy: http://www.sendstation.com/
I used one for a long time when I had a first generation iphone and the headphone jack was recessed.

I tried to make my own but the pins on those connectors are TINY and unless you're used to working on SMD stuff I wouldn't suggest doing it yourself. Mine just turned in to big balls of solder.

awesome, thanks for the link. I started looking up the pin contacts on the dock and figured soldering would be a bitch.

There is this for iPod...

Dunno if they still make this? Never used it myself.

for playback to my console,

I have the iPod dock, by Apple... of all companies.

You get a cable that goes from Stereo 1/8" to two RCA or two 1/4" TS ends, and

"Bob's Your Uncle"

Much like noeqplease says, you could do it yourself. Some tutorials are linked here:

and here

I keep contemplating doing this myself.

I have those cables. I'm trying to avoid the 1/8' jack because it's a headphone (amplified) output. Going out the dock connector is line level, it's a better sound. Thanks for the links though.

This is a cool link, not sure if have appeared here before:
http://www.allpinouts.org/index.php/App ... Phone_dock

pins 2 to 6 on the dock are audio line I/O's.

Now, if somebody could just come out with a breakout cable with those connections..

Forget XLR outs. Where can I get a midi in so I can use a real keyboard with all those great soft synths.

The DOCK connector IS line out. It just happens to come out in an 1/8" form factor for convenience to most users.

So, go get one and hook it up.

Noeqplease, the above statement is very confusing to me, the OP is saying the same thing, yet you restate it with capital letters? Maybe you mean that the HP connector is line out? typo?

By the way, the link proposed by The Scum is exactly what we are looking for, albeit the finished work will not be easily heat-shrink'd..

Hi.

When you put an iPod or iPhone on the corresponding dock, the dock itself has an 1/8" audio output, which is supposed to be line level, not headphone level.

Confirming on my Dock right now... it is the same output level, so no, it is not actually line level out through the iPod connector. It sounds the same, and is the same level here, when I connect the input to my console either to the dock, or directly to the iPod's headphone outputs.

So, my mistake. Or their mistake... their manual is not clear on what level the Dock connector is...

Cheers

The sound quality of the apple dock is quite disappointing. Google it and you'll see that there is another DAC inside of it. Get the pocket dock instead. Plain vanilla line out from the connector like it ought to be. Now if somehow you could get a digital out and use a nicer DAC....

If you read my earlier post, you can see I confirmed that it sounds exactly the same as the headphone output.

If I want a better quality of sound, rest assured I will not be using anything like an iPod or iPhone to play back...
