diy sampler

Post by andris » Mon Oct 25, 2010 10:49 am

Anyone know where I could find a device that would sample audio? I'm looking to build a simple device that would sample and loop incoming audio at the touch of a button. 1/4" ins and outs, and one button that records while pressed, and when released instantly loops, another button to clear the loop. Super short sample times would be a plus (so you could just tap the button and get a granular type sound.) If anyone could give me tips on where to start with this project it would be much appreciated, or if there is already a product out there that does this I'd love to hear about it.

That kit looks awesome, seems like it might be a little while till it's back in stock though.

If you can find a bunch of those cheap digital keychain memo recorders I'm sure you hack them to do that.

I've wanted to try this but never found the time:

I think there is a new version of the core part sold by RS then what was used but I think it could be figured out with a little reverse engineering. Let us know if you have any luck!

Depending on what technology you're familiar with, there are a number of ways to do it. None of them is especially simple.

You could do it with an Arduino, but there's not much RAM on board, so you'd either need to expand it, or settle for really short loop times. The onboard AD/DA won't be amazing, either.

You could do it with an FPGA...again, RAM may be a constraint.

You might see if sparkfun.com has anything that meets your needs...they have some little sound modules, but I'm not sure of any of them would work as a real-time looper.

You might also see if any of the commercial looper pedals meet your needs. I know the Line6 DM4 can do it, and Boss/Roland have several as well.

I'll confess I didn't want to share this. I'm so ashamed but I wanted to be the only one with this incredible device. ...uh, even though it's on ebay and I'm sure he's sold dozens.

This guy, spunkytoofers, builds and sells what you want... that's right, exactly what you want and his name is friggin' Spunkytoofers?! Can't be you say....

I have one and can't say enough good things about the guy or his work. Mine is not pretty but so much noise fun it can do! His bends are the bee's knees!

That circuit bent ps2 looks awesome, thanks for sharing (and I can understand why you wanted to keep it under wraps.) I think I'm going to pick up one of those pedals used on ebay and get the bend, it sounds like just what I was looking for.

There are other variations. They are all mini samplers used to record trash talk and play it back via pushbutton while you play your Xbox.

Also

There are these samplers that are sold in bulk now for cheap:

The drawback to the Saw sampler is that there is a gap between playback. Don't know about the other ones.
