Beatles Mics?

Post by mattdhall » Wed Nov 03, 2010 12:43 am

I haven't been able to find any info on this in my searches and conversations. In old clips of the Beatles both on stage and in the studio, they use these mics with long (2-4 foot), skinny necks with a small ball capsule on the end. Does anyone know what kind of mics these were?

Think you might be able to find and post a pic?

It sounds like it could be either a Nuemann CMV 3 or some type of Beyer-Dynamic...

I've always assumed that they're C28s with extensions...

They had three of them during the rooftop concert, I've seen them used in studio photos, too. The microphone seems to be integrated into a skinny shaft that runs all the way down to a weighted base.

Oh, those... Not at all what I said. I missed the part where you said two to four feet.

For what it's worth, I think those are pretty rare uses, rather than "standard," for the Beatles.

They look a bit like, but not exactly, some extension tubes I have for AKG 451s. It fits between the capsule and the main mic body. The capsules don't look like 451 capsules I've seen, though.

you can have the rooftop mics. I'll take the one that John chewed gum/sang into on the live broadcast recording of "All You Need is Love". That mic!

George's lime green pants in that picture. I think it was the trousers.
