Pro Tools 9 -- Is hell frozen over?

Post by kingmetal » Thu Nov 04, 2010 5:33 pm

So am I crazy or did Digidesign just announce a version of Pro Tools with full ASIO / Core Audio support?

http://www.marketwatch.com/story/avid-u ... _news_stmp

Focusrite just sent me an e-mail stating that my Saffires (both of them) are Pro Tools 9 compatible and they are releasing a plugin that will integrate some of the direct-monitoring capabilities of the interface into PT directly (or at least make them easier to access? I'm not really clear).

It's a $600 product and I'm now officially saving up for it:

Guess whose booth I'll be all over at AES.

However there looks to be no VST support.

OK, now that may be a game changer. I mean honestly at my level, I will stick with cubase, but wow they finally (may have) done it. . .

I just bought Cubase 5 less than 6 months ago so I'm with you, but honestly I see it as the potential to get on to a truly good editing workflow and gain some industry compatibility early in my career. I'll miss the shit out of VariAudio, but doing multi-track phase-accurate editing in Cubase is a lot like doing multi-track phase-accurate editing on the carcass of a dead animal.

holy crapola....no dongle (well...it does need an iLok key) and adc with beat detective and mp3 exporting included....you mean they listened?

i'm in....and $249 for a crossgrade price is decent. Good thing I've got an 003r....and I need to upgrade to Snow Leopard now, but heck not to shabby Avid.

If it had AU support I'd be sorely tempted. As it is, I may pick up a copy at some point for compatibility's sake.

So looking forward to using my UA plugs w/PT9. Definitely a game changer!

I totally agree, I have used Cubase for like 10 years now and love it, but always wished they had a decent beat detective style editing. People have been asking Steinberg for that almost as long as they have been asking PT for delay compensation. Honestly, anymore I don't seem to track much stuff that needs that detailed kind of editing, but the few times I have man did it suck.

I would be shocked if PT ever went VST, but I am shocked they went non-native hardware so who knows?

One question, is it 32 tracks total - 16 in and 16 out or is it 32 tracks in and 32 tracks out?

I just need 24 to feed my console if I ever picked up PT too.

Well, they pretty much covered every reason I had for sticking with DP. Time to make the switch.

I am truly shocked at how much this addresses most of the complaints about Pro Tools. Avid actually listened to their customers! Amazing.

Now, I'm off to play with it and see how well it works.

Audio Units are supported. It's RTAS/AU only. Your wish has been granted!

This is big, seriously. November 12th.

My question is: why announce HD Native and THEN announce this? Marketing buzz?

Also, I haven't used PTLE in a long time -- when it says there is no input monitoring, what does that mean exactly? Does that mean you can't monitor signal when a track is out of record?
