Buzzin' EV 1122 Receiver

Post by EvanMidds » Sat Nov 06, 2010 3:32 pm

Hey guys,
I picked up an old EV 1122 Receiver for a dollar to hook up a turntable out in the studio. It powers up great and albums sound fine through it but it has this constant buzz to it. I've just been listening through headphones for the time being and even when the record player isn't connected it still hums. The buzz is not effected by volume change, if I turn the volume all the way up I hear mix of the buzz plus the noise floor. I'm not overly concerned with it but if I can get it to stop buzzing that'd be great. The wiring is point to point on turret strips. Any ideas? Transformer perhaps?

Does it have a ground pin?

Is the outlet grounded?

Otherwise, can you check for AC voltage on the power supply rails?>

No ground pin for the receiver and the outlet is grounded.

I am getting AC on the PSU rails.

What do you think it might be?

Take care.

Couldn't a bad power supply filter cap cause both hum in the audio and AC on the rails? What do I know?

It's a really old unit, right? Are the filter caps original?

My guess is that the filter caps are original and I would say the receiver is from the mid to late 70's. I can't find anything about it on the web so that is my best guess.

If the rails have AC, filter caps are the first suspect.

AC on the rails = hum on the output.

Thanks for narrowing it down guys. I'll take a closer look at the caps and swap them out for new ones.
