can we have a show of hands of everyone who's been approached by someone wanting to use one of your tracks for something, and they say there's no money but guarantee that it'll be "Great Exposure"...
this is especially cute when the someone is a large corporation with vast reservoirs of cash at their disposal.

My local craigslist goes absolutely apeshit about this every time some coffee house or bar posts an ad asking if anyone wants to play for free (or tips and a beverage or something.)
Personally, I think it should be up to the individual to decide if they want to do something for free or not. Although keeping that sign in mind when deciding is a really good idea.
I gotta say, back when I was gigging, the absolute bestest gigs I ever played were either the ones where we played for free, like for a benefit concert, or the ones where we got paid way too much. It seemed like on the free gigs they were really appreciative of what we were doing and on the expensive gigs they figured they should treat us great if we were getting paid that much money. Those were the gigs with the "green room" and the fruit platter and a cooler full of beverages for the band. It was all those $50-100 (for the whole band) gigs that kinda sucked and they would expect unreasonable things for the amount they were offering.
That's just my [outdated] experience though.
