inline fuses before monitors

Post by Brett Siler » Fri Nov 26, 2010 5:07 pm

Anybody do this? I just had a power amp freak out and blow a woofer on my monitors. I was wondering if putting a fuse between the power amp and monitors would be good idea so if my monitor freaks again it will just blow the fuse and not the speakers. Does it degrade the sound?

i do it to all passive monitors i own & install for other folks.

does it degrade the sound? not as much as a blown tweeter or woofer! ;)

fuse ratings depend on speaker size...i use 1.5 amp fast blow for my ns-10s, and i listen pretty loud.

Well I generally mix music around 85 db. Sometimes I'll crank it for a sec, but usually only to listen to a song or two. If someone of your caliber does it then you convinced me it's ok. Thanks Chris.

Just to know, does it affect the sound of the monitors at all?

I've never noticed it affecting the sound. The formula I learned is:

Take rated power of speaker and divide by ohms. Take that number and get the square root. That should be your maximum fuse size.

Example: speakers 75 watts, 8 ohms. Divide 75 by 8 = 9.375
square root of 9.375 = 3.06
Maximum fuse size = 3 or 2.5 to be safer

If it makes you feel better you can spend $45 on "audiophile" fuses

psinglet Thanks for sharing your formula. I've always wondered about this myself.

when in doubt on fuse size, start small, crank 'em up- if you keep popping fuses as you're trying to work, inch up the size a bit.

i've never A/B'd with or without fuses....sorry.
