I have a bunch of wooden triangles

Post by Ryan Wasoba » Sat Nov 27, 2010 12:54 am

Hey board,

I have a few dozen wooden triangles, about 4x4x5.5 and 2" thick, leftover from a house project. I was thinking they might be useful to make a diffuser of some sort. Anybody have any suggestions or other ideas? Just seeing if there's anything fun I can do with them.

Maybe get some pieces of 2' square masonite and make some ghetto wooden triangle versions of the RPG Skyline Diffuser by stackign up various levels of triangles and gluing them together?

@SoftSupply - That's exactly the kind of thing I'm thinking; the ghetto version of something way more expensive. Is there anything I need to concern myself with about the placement?

Wondering about making a panel trap like described on Ethan Winer's site with the "ghetto skyline diffuser" on the front face. Good idea? Bad idea? Worst idea? Best idea?

and @eeldip - any dungeonmaster worth his weight in gelvins goes nowhere without his twenty sided die.

Not sure triangles will diffuse sound. Diffusion is a precise thing, it is not the same as breaking up or scattering sound and depends on mathematical sequences in terms of build geometry to effectively diffuse sound.

On the other hand, you might be able to use them in interesting patterns on, say, the rear wall or a wall in the tracking room, to help break up reflections to a degree.

At this point I'm thinking of doing something of that nature in my tracking room. I have a few boxes of 703 that have been staring me down while I figure out what to do with them. So I'm thinking of alternating the triangle diffusers with squares of 703 to alternate the dead/live aspects of my room.

I've read up on primitive root sequences and may try to apply that to the triangles.

Also, I've had the title of this thread in my head all day to the tune of "I've got a brand new pair of rollerskates..."

I think you might not achieve the specialized "diffusion" that researched products have.

You will however be able to change the acoustics, and character of you space and potentially reduce flutter echo. It will also cost hundreds (thousands?) of dollars less.

You could wear one on your head, to concentrate the cosmic energy of the Universe?

Or wait-- it might only concentrate its wooden energy-- forget it.

I saw the title (and thinking percussion) "wooden triangles? WTF?". I was relieved to see that was not what this thread was about after all. 8)
