I'm also in a basement. The previous owner of the house did the reno down there, I just moved my gear in and did a bit of treatment. The room is 20 x 30ish with a 7 foot ceiling. You don't really get a sense of it from the photo but the mix area is only about a third of the space. The rest of the room is full of instruments (lots of organs & electric pianos, and lots of guitars and amps). Noise isn't an issue because I'm mostly using the space as a mix and overdub room for records that are tracked elsewhere. I have done a bit of tracking here but in those instances I generally put the band upstairs in the living room.
Like I said, noise hasn't been an issue so far and I haven't done any soundproofing but I do have the advantage of being in a detached house with a driveway on either side of the property. Both of those things are a bit of a rarity in downtown Toronto where victorian style row houses are the norm. My last space was a converted lane-way garage with less than 10 feet between me and my neighbours. I did lots of soundproofing there.

Mine is located where a sane person --or a person with a family to answer to-- would have a dining room. It's not optimal, there's really not enough room to do what I want, I deal with window air conditioner issues in the summer and radiator hiss in the winter...but these are smallish tradeoffs that don't really get in my way too badly. I've designed 30 plays and recorded/mixed a bunch of albums and scored a couple of films in that room, and if I wake up at 3 am with an idea I can be recording it in less than 2 minutes, so I guess I've found a way to make it work pretty well.

Drums set up for the continuing sessions for the Deniz Tek Group album and several Donovan's Brain records. Studio is actually pretty neat and tidy. Ric Parnell has been warming the drum throne. The Casino is the current guitar of choice for all involved. The little Acoustic Amp is also first call.

yes, $65 at the neighborhood pawn. I was told "the brown ones" are the ones to get. I saw a bigger one with extension cab a few years ago, but $500 was too rich for me. A very versatile amp clean to crunch

I like how this post ask "What's normality?" once again!
I guess lots of people looking at all this might have the same reaction as me in a car tuning forum...

Anyway, It feels always good to share madness/passion in community!

So, here's my new studio, here in Montreal :
