Monitor stands (TNT "stubby" design)

Post by pixeltarian » Wed Jan 19, 2011 1:15 am

I roughly followed these instructions: http://www.tnt-audio.com/clinica/stubby_e.html only I used 4" abs because it holds more sand and it's already black. Also, for the tube padding I cut up my girlfriend's exercise ball that I accidentally popped with my throwing knife the day before instead of buying rope caulk. To make them the height I needed I had to buy an extra 3 inches of threaded rod and used a coupling to get them to be the right height. If you do this, don't forget the locktight.

The top is a really nice ikea shelf. I used it because I had it, and didn't want to make yet another run to lowes. it's real pretty though - so that worked out well.

not sure why this fist link is broken. the code is the same as all the other ones :(

I totally need a "finished" photo I know.
I'll take one soon and update this post.

despite what the instructions say about using a sanding wheel for getting the pvc even, I just used a 12" miter saw at work. it's nearly exactly this one: http://www.dewalt.com/tools/machinery-m ... dw716.aspx - I did have to use some irwin quickgrips and some creativity to get the pipe clamped nice and square but it worked great. the stands are level and the cuts were very clean.

hand miter boxes don't work - they're too small, but if you're design supports it I'd recommend using a bonafide PVC saw with your hand miter box:

Well, I have knives. I suppose I could try throwing them.

It just never occurred to me to try that in the living room.
