How much money have you spent on gear since you started out?

Post by vivalastblues » Sun Feb 20, 2011 6:03 pm

I did a calculation of this last night, putting everything I've bought into a spreadsheet. My total comes to around $8k.

I was pretty happy that I haven't spent an insane amount of money on this and am able to make pretty damn good recordings.

I don't envision myself spending too much more either, but that's probably not true...

Anyway I thought it'd be interesting to see how much other people have spent...so what's your total?

I'd guess about 80K... give or take.

This would include converting my 2 car garage into a studio, and all the gear.

Over 60 microphones, Pro Tools HD, Waves Mercury bundle, etc etc etc...

I do not envision spending any more now.
Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.

I'd guess I'm somewhere around the $40K mark.

Who knows, with the all the buying and selling I do. At the moment, I only own about $2000 worth of recording equipment (2 AKG C 414 B-ULS, 1 AKG C 460 B-ULS, Blue Mouse, EV RE20, Shure Unidyne III SM57, Aphex Expressor (Audio Upgrades), (2) DBX 160XT's) but over the past 5 or 6 years I've probably bought and sold $20,000 worth of equipment.

Basement conversion: about $6k in materials, but I did all the work myself, so it would have cost closer to $12k or so if I had hired it out

Gear, including instruments: about $8k

6 or 7k on a modest digital/analog hybid home studio set-up. I've got nearly all I need for the forseeable future, unless I upgrade to an HD system someday. Would like some more decent mics, and some random outboard gear, but I'm pretty happy with the recordings as they are.

Trying to spend more as I'm planning on building out my garage. That'll be another 6-10k. Then...unless I open a comercial facility, that'll probably be it for some time.

I did an inventory on a spreadsheet that listed purchased price as well as serial #, etc. Then I decided to check the grand total of the purchase price. I was quite sobered to find it was excess of $80K. And I'm RENTING my living space. That single discovery killed my GAS and I now am saving $$$ for a house..

Around $8k, including acoustic panels for my basement space. I still have a wishlist, but I don't feel now like my setup is holding me back.

Need any help?

I've probably spent around $65k over 35 years. OK, that's a lie, it's more, but, I had a nice moment there for a second. Till I thought about it.
Harumph!
