Logitech Performance MX

Smaller, less expensive, almost as nice:

Logitech Anywhere MX

There are a few things I like about these. First, they both have really small USB receivers, so you can put them pretty much anywhere without getting in the way. Second, they use what Logitech calls a "darkfield" laser. I don't know what that is, but the upshot is that it works on just about any surface, and tracks really well. Third, the mouse wheel can switch between click-to-click like a standard mouse or to spin freely, which is really useful for scrolling through long documents or lists.

Love mine for my DAW.

My second fave is the MS trackball, which, for me is better for office work.

somebody splane to me why you guys like trackballs so much. really. i haven't used one since I played centipede. isn't it more hand and arm motion? I have my mouse set on almost the highest pointer speed, so i only have to move it about an inch to get all the way across both of my LCDs. what makes them so great for DAWs? i see them in studios all the time.

I think the main two reasons are a much reduced risk of carpal tunnel/rsi and the fact that they take up less desk real estate. I do not have one at home but one of the main studios I work in does and it really helps with the rsi.

Also, I think you'd be surprised how easy they are to operate effeciently. I was recitent about using one at first as well but I had no problems at all and actually prefer it to a mouse for some things, the giant scroll wheel around the ball being one.

I assume you have to move the mouse that inch, with the hand, wrist and arm motion do do so.

With the track ball, you move the finger or thumb a fraction of an inch - it is equally speed-adjustable.

Also, most of them have two or more assignable buttons, and a wheel. On my MS mouse, the wheel depresses as a button, as well as allowing whatever function is assigned (ex., scrolling.)

+1 here. i'm a mouse guy but always dealing with stuff on my desk, taking up space and wanting to have low sensitivity for precise movements when editing and such the mouse always wanted to much of that desk space.
'till i did a session at a studio with one of these sitting right up there, small footprint, loads of function, and a huge accurate ball.

got one for myself and i'll never go back

I've got a low end logitech trackball. Not perfect but I can't stress the trackball thing enough. I thought I had a piano playing related injury from poor technique, and an audio guru told me to switch up the mousing. Did wonders. Piano technique still sucks, but my wrist doesn't hurt any more!
