This is about the mixing of that album

There are a few threads over at gearslutz where micheal Wagner and Flemming R. discuss that album and I seem to remember pictures as well.

I remember seeing a picture of Lars' kit miced with nothing but 57's.

Flemming pops up about half way down the first page and talks about mop.

His site still exists...

I want email him and see if the "notes" page still exists. Seems like he put together a lot of great info and pictures too.

Does anyone still have the pictures he posted?

I'm not sure how "Metallica/Puppets"-specific the information is, but I've seen a pretty interesting series of videos with Michael Wagenor in the studio. Here's a link to one that I could find... Google or YouTube the others and you should be good to go:

OHHHHHHH.... I just watched this video last week while searching for Kick-Drum mic shootouts. This video came up and I totally enjoyed it.

My #1 lesson learned?

Buy a Royer 121 - for kicks and guitars. For guitars, it's like the new SM57 from all the info I've been reading. Meaning, the new standard for guitar cabs.

What a sweet little gem that was to read through. His notes pages are still up. The link is in the very last post. Yeah 57's!

If by "new" you mean "for the last 10 years or so" then, yes.

well, no. there aren't many records that sound as weird as justice.

but puppets, despite being perhaps the pre-eminent record of my teenage years, i gotta say it sounds kinda strange to me now. gauzy and overcompressed. i know it's not compressed at all compared to where we are nowadays, but put that and ride the lightning on back to back and see which one hits harder.

also, i actually heard the bass on 'justice'! there's a few spots on the title track that prove that jason's fader wasn't muted entirely.

hahahaha, nice...

it's been so many years since i listened to this stuff too. and i think most of my recording/mixing experience years were those intervening years... i bet i don't even recognize them. i'll have to dig up some cd's (when my girl isn't home)

Most of the stuff (metal anyway) from that era sounds a little goofy. Just about everything has that same sort of midrangey thing with all the low end about an octave up from where it generally is now.

I have no idea why anyone would mic an entire kit with 57's when you presumably have a choice. It's not like 421's didn't exist at the time...
