Los Lobos - Blue Moonlight Guitar Solo Tone?

Post by akg414 » Sun Mar 13, 2011 7:00 pm

does anyone know what makes the tone in this solo? first, there is a tubular guitar tone, then it sounds like it's sent through some kind of phasey, talk-boxy effect.

Here it is:

Any info would be appreciated.

This is my theory thus far:

Les Paul (neck pickup), Matchless amp, Electric-Mistress with sweep-lock on.

For the gurgly, phasey, effect, not sure. Sounds like a talk-box with slow mouth motion, but who knows.... This is where ya'll come in, help me figure this out!

Oh! I've got that album. I'll have to check out your clip, and try to find the disc...

Huh. I don't know. I've heard strats sound like that too, but the go-to for sustain of course is the Les Paul (plus I think that's what I've seen those guys playing the most). Amp-- no idea; try to find something tubey that breaks-up just right.

I don't think it's a talkbox; what about a wah-wah half-open?

I believe it is a Stratocaster.
To me the giveaway is the relationship between the low end and top end.
I ownd three strats, one les paul, one flying V, and assorted other electrics.
My first pick would definitely be a Strat.

Neck pickup or a combo of neck and middle pickup.
There is a wah filter on it that stays on the same band throughout, until the end when it is changed.
As far as amplifier... definitely a tube one, but who knows which one...

Cheers

This is good! But do you guys here the actual "phasing" sound? The filter is moving. It very well might be a wha-wha. I should hook up my strat and wha and give it a go...

But then again, I'm hearing that flanged sound - not the regualr flanger we're all used to hearing. I'm talking about the Electric Mistriss which allows you to lock down the sweeping, so you get a hollow, bell-like tone. Give it a try, this might be our magic bullet ;-)

Not sure about the bell-tone you're describing Brad, but that eq sweep is moving way too slowly and, ah, "sweepingly" for a talk-box. The hose would have to be four feet across, and the player's mouth (and ability to sustain a smooth opening and closing motion) double that (no dirty jokes, please... It's just physics!).

So what I'm saying (but forgot to!) is a slow moving little roll on the wah at the end...

I really don't think this sounds like this, but wasn't there some Los Lobos album that came out like, a zillion years ago, and everyone was like, "whoah! The guitars sound awesome on this! How'd you do it?" And LL was like, "actually, what we did was plug the guitars directly into the Hi-Z ins of a cheapo portastudio and overdrive it. We had pedals and shit, but no amps. What you are hearing is mostly the portastudio's pres distorting." And everyone was all "lol wut???"

Again, obviously, that doesn't sound like what's happening here, I'm just adding this because at least one other time in LL's recorded output, there was a case where it didn't sound like that was what was happening and it was.

Just goes to show you that it doesn't matter what you play through, it's "who" does the playing.

Caesar and David are two of THEE MOST UNDER RATED players.
