Chicago area - got a Yamaha CP-70 I can try out?

Post by Scodiddly » Mon Mar 14, 2011 7:38 am

I've got a line on a Yamaha CP-70 piano from a cousin in California - great deal aside from the shipping cost. Trouble is, I've never played one.

This is one of those classic Yamaha "portable" pianos, real strings and it breaks into two parts that are both insanely heavy.

Anybody in the Chicago area got a CP-70 or CP-80 I could spend a few minutes playing to see if I love it or hate it?

I'm pretty sure Andy's Pro Hire has one. Also, I know a guy who brought one to a gig awhile back but I don't know if he owns or rents. I'll ask him.

Update: the CP70 I'm thinking of is one of the house pianos at Lilly's.

Just play the intro to "S.O.S" and you'll be hooked...

OK, so that's a vote against.

Yeah, but "That's All" by Genesis is also a CP70.

***Just got a CP80M here at Pogo, though we're a two and a half hour drive from Chicago. You're welcome to play it, though!
Cheers!

I think every Keane song uses a CP-70B.

I think they are awesome and keep missing out on them locally.

Yeah, and Peter Gabriel used one on "So".

The question here is whether I'd want to play a CP-70 as a practice instrument, wedging it into my tiny living room. So for that I need to actually get my hands on one.

I recently bought one for a decent price, brought it into my small basement studio and realized it simply took up too much real estate. I'm not a piano player, so I had it primarily for artists to use. And while I had it nobody really utilized it, so off it went. In an ideal situation, I would have tons of space and large space hogs wouldn't be such an issue. All this is just to say sometimes it comes down to space vs. use.

my main music partner has one. in the 6 years i have known him i have maybe seen him use it 2x. it took up more room than his upright piano and suitcase rhodes - both of which he used a ton more. I keep trying to get him to sell it but he doesn't sell any gear he gets. it sounds sorta neat I guess but would take a real piano or a rhodes or a wurly over it any day for sound and space.

Apparently the piano tuner he uses hates tuning it.

Well, I know I'd like a wurlie. But they're kind of popular again, so it's a little hard to find them for reasonable prices. This is a great deal from a cousin, so it's worth checking out.

We have a CP-70 here at Hotel Earth in Logan Square... the space is a total mess right now, as we're right in the middle of a control room rebuild, but you're welcome to come by and check it out! It's a little out of tune right now. Send me a PM if you want to come by.
One of my favorite things you can do with it is to prepare the strings with bolts above the hammers... sounds like an electric gamelan.
Everything is going to be OK.
