SM7 - Using the Frequency Switches on the Back

Post by Rolsen » Sat Apr 09, 2011 11:59 am

By default, I usually use the bass roll-off on vocals and most the time on guitar amps, but I'm wondering what others' applications are for the high frequency boost and bass roll-off switch?

I've never liked the high frequency bumb, so to avoid subtractive eq'ing later (and shear laziness) I just leave it flat.

I love the close proximity lowend on an SM7. I tend to highpass an SM7 vocal take less than with other mics.

i run mine flat 100% of the time and use my pre's to get what I want out of it... so far, that has made me more than happy with it.

Jeez, thanks for this....

Didn't even know that there was an onboard EQ, so I took the cover off mine and sure enough, the highs were bumped....

This is one of my favorite mics...
So-ooo, a full report soon on how I like the mic now that it's set to flat....

This is one of the few mics where I often use the onboard shaping; both the rolloff and the bump. The only other mic I often use the built-in tonal-shaping on a lot is the 441. Not always, but more often than I expect to. It's a use-your-ears situation for sure.

I like the high boost if I'm recording a quiet vocal and want to get more detail and high end sensitivity out of the mic.

Otherwise, I always keep it flat, and boost the highend with EQ if necessary.

Can't think of a single instance where I've used the bass roll-off.
