Behringer Attempts the Auratone?
Behringer has an Auratone replacement in the works. I'm looking forward to reviewing this when it comes out. http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/C5A.aspx
It seems like the right kind of product for their company to be making.
They're also trying a stab at a "full-range" version, I imagine to better emulate today's computer speakers:

I'll have a full story out soon as I can get my hands on some of these...

But... the Auratone was used precisely because it sounds like crap. If you could get a half-decent mix on them, then you automatically were entered to win a Grammy.digitaldrummer wrote:wow, someone to make cheap speakers even cheaper!
but seriously, if they price them right they may sell a lot of them. of course if they sound like crap, then maybe not...
Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.

I agree, seems very smart.fossiltooth wrote:Behringer has an Auratone replacement in the works. I'm looking forward to reviewing this when it comes out.

They're both "full-range." The only difference seems to be the finish.
I look forward to it.fossiltooth wrote:I'll have a full story out soon as I can get my hands on some of these...

I think you may be right. Looks like share the same manual and technical documentation as well. At 90hz-17khz, the term "full-range" might be a little audacious, but that's why I love my originals...rhythm ranch wrote:fossiltooth wrote:They're also trying a stab at a "full-range" version, I imagine to better emulate today's computer speakers.

The Auratones didn't sound bad... they just didn't have any lows or highs. But the mids were really accurate. You could really hear what was happening in a track with those things.Nick Sevilla wrote:But... the Auratone was used precisely because it sounds like crap. I'm using cubes made with 5" full-range model 11-159 from electronix.com and they are a pretty decent approximation of the Auratone cubes. Unfortunately, they just had a big price hike and they now cost $4.29 each. Still, if you can swing that and have enough spare lumber to make a sealed box with 5" internal dimensions, you will have a useful midrange monitor for not too much.
I'm also planning to build a smaller set with either 1" or 2" drivers that can run off a headphone amp output, and their model 11-150 will be one that I try out. That one is currently $1.95 each.
Cheers,
Otto

Agreed. I do the lions share of my mixing on Auratones, despite owning a pair of much more expensive Event ASP8s. You just have to be careful not to pull out too much around 2.5k as they do tend to be quite pronounced in that region in my experience.Scodiddly wrote:The Auratones didn't sound bad... they just didn't have any lows or highs. No ports and no tweeter means no weird resonant frequencies or unreliable spots in the midrange. I'll compare these new ones to both my old pairs and see how they hold up.
