Just thought I'd update this thread.

I just ordered a pair of API 527's. This is my first venture into the 500 series world. My situation has changed a bit and space is the real concern these days. I sold off a LOT of gear and I went from two packed 12 space racks to a single 12 space with room to spare. It actually feels great.

I think the 527 will be versatile enough for both tracking & mixing. Right now I'm using the A-designs 500HR (2-slot) rack, but someday I might go for the 10 space API rack. That will allow me to expand my options slowly over time without dominating my work space.

Depending on when I sell a few remaining pieces, I've been looking at a pair of API 550b's. I'm not expecting them to magically affect my recordings, but I have the Waves Studio Classics series and I think it would be easier for my to translate that familiarity to OTB eq (yes, I will be relying on my ears and not my eyes).

Thanks to all for the input!
