USB interface - no preamp needed

Post by Jawsome » Fri Apr 15, 2011 6:15 am

I was hoping for some guidance as to a USB interface without regard to preamps.

I have access to a great preamp (Universal Audio 610) so I don't need a preamp on my interface.

Just need a way to get my preamp signal into my PC.

I would prefer to avoid the expense of pro-level converters.
Is there anything worth recommending under $500?

Just for background, I used to run high end preamps into a Firewire interface, using Logic on a Mac.

Getting back into recording after years away, and just want a simple PC setup with Reaper, EZDrummer, one mic, and one preamp.

Thanks!

Do you have a desk top? If so just get your self a decent sound card with digital ins and hook up the TI EVM 4222

While it wont be usb - it still will be just as easy...

there's plenty written about it here and on the "other site" just google it...

$150 - plus you'll need a power supply - I'm planning on getting one.

I've also wanted to get that pre for a long time... love it.
Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Look at the Echo AudioFire:

It cant get any simpler that that.

Also, I like the RME stuff, and it'd have more inputs and a few preamps. Also, it's a bit more bit more $500.

The one think I'd avoid is have an interface with a preamp that you can't bypass completely, so you aren't adding the extra gain stage. Most of the small interfaces have preamps, until you go to the more high-end stuff like an Apogee Rosetta 200, where you can get a USB card and make it USB interface without preamps. But as you probably know, it's not cheap.

Why bother using a great preamp if you're going to run it through crappy converters?

Yeah, exactly, but if I've got access to the preamp why wouldn't I use it?
Looking for the most economical way to get the preamp into my computer.
